Birth In 5 Tearing in Birth

Today Hehe gives us a four minute crash course on tearing in childbirth. Something no one wants to talk about, but everyone should learn about! From how we grade the severity of tears, to which ones require the most care, to how you can lessen your risk of tearing, we cover it all!

5 Things you need to know about tearing:

1. There are 4 degrees of tearing. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, OASIS Obstetrical Anal Sphincter injuries
2. You deserve pain relief for repairs—If you have an epidural, it should help with the pain but you can always ask for local anesthesia. If you had an unmedicated delivery, you should absolutely feel comfortably numb while they repair you.
3. ACOG estimates that 53-79% of people will experience a 1st-2nd degree tear and states around 12% of births require an episiotomy! They also have guidelines of ways that your provider should manage your birth to help reduce tearing—be sure to ask if your provider is familiar with these!
4. Risk Factors for increased tearing include: -assisted births, NO episiotomy, having a big baby, lying down in labor, Lying down during pushing, a malpositioned baby, having an epidural, long pushing stage and one- step delivery (leads to shoulder dystocia which leads to increased tearing)
5. When healing: Ice has been shown to help in the immediate 48 hours -72 hours with pain relief but there is question on using it long term since icing areas restrict blood flow. When your'e healing from birth, we want to be promoting healthy blood flow to that area!
