Women face unique health challenges as they age and start their journeys with menopause, so having trusted medical care is important.
“Several years ago, Swedish brought together women who were in the years after childbearing to talk about their unique needs and what were not being met by the current system,” said Dr. Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su, Medical Director of Menopause, Women’s Wellness and Specialty GYN Services. “Out of that grew the commitment to the Women’s Wellness Program.”
The Women’s Wellness Program offers general gynecologic care, but doctors also focus on particular areas, like menopause, sexual health, and urogynecology. The team treats a variety of conditions, including urinary incontinence, prolapse, sexual pain or dysfunction, vaginal disorders, and pelvic pain.
If a woman needs specialized gynecologic care, she may be referred to the Swedish Women’s Wellness Program. The clinic prides itself on collaboration and always communicates with a patient’s referring primary care physician or OB-GYN. Physicians at the clinic also have connections in endocrinology, bone health, cardiology, and behavioral health to refer patients to other providers.
“We are uniquely positioned to be a hub for women during this time of life who understand women and the transitional time they’re in,” Dr. Dunsmoor-Su said.
Dr. Dunsmoor-Su and the other providers at the clinic have candid conversations with patients about what they’re experiencing, how common and normal many issues actually are, and how they can be addressed.
The clinic has plans to grow in the future to focus on even more needs. This includes adding educational classes and expanding primary care directly connected to the clinic, like cardiology, pelvic floor physical therapy, and sexual health support.
“It’s not that we don’t have great doctors who have been doing this,” Dr. Dunsmoor-Su said. “We have great OB-GYNs, great family practitioners, and great internal medicine doctors who have been taking this care of women, but it’s nice to have it in one place.”
