This is the cast iron pan that made history. In 1967, one of the production foremen at Birmingham Stove & Range brought in an idea that his wife had given him, for a cast iron pan made for making cornbread. The company decided to give it a try, and this was the beginning of the corn bread skillet. The cornbread skillet was a wild success, and it was a runaway best seller. BS&R originally made the pan with a PATENT PENDING mark to discourage other companies from making their own corn bread pans, but this didn't work. It was so popular that other companies began making their own cornbread pans, and this pan is still sold today by Lodge cast iron and other companies. The original corn bread skillet can still be found at antique stores and flea markets across the country, and while it usually isn't very valuable, you can still use this pan and know you're cooking with a piece of American history.
